Benin Introduces Free 72-Hour Visa for Cruise Passengers to Boost Maritime Tourism

Benin has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening its appeal as a maritime tourism destination: a free 72-hour visa for cruise ship passengers. This measure is specifically designed for international tourists arriving with approved travel agencies.

A Strategic Move to Attract More Cruise Ships

The free visa initiative is part of a broader effort by the Beninese government to position the country as a key stop for cruise liners operating in West Africa. Authorities say the goal is to simplify entry procedures and make Benin more attractive to shipping companies and high-end cruise operators.

Since early 2025, several luxury cruise ships—including the Seabourn Sojourn and Crystal Symphony—have already docked at the Port of Cotonou, signaling growing interest in Benin as a cruise destination.

Enhanced Access to Top Attractions

The visa waiver allows visitors to spend up to three days exploring major cultural and historical sites such as Ouidah, Porto-Novo, Ganvié, and Cotonou. The simplified entry process is expected to enhance the overall travel experience and encourage longer or repeat visits.

A Win for Cruise Lines and Travelers

By easing bureaucratic hurdles, Benin hopes to secure a permanent place on the itineraries of international cruise lines. The port authority and the Benin Tourism Agency are collaborating to ensure seamless coordination and a warm welcome for cruise passengers.

For Other Travelers: The e-Visa Remains Available

Visitors not eligible for the 72-hour visa waiver can still enter Benin through its streamlined electronic visa system, available at www.evisa.bj. The options include:

  • Single-entry e-Visa (30 days): $50
  • Multiple-entry e-Visa (30 days): $75
  • Multiple-entry e-Visa (90 days): $100

Processing times typically range from 24 to 48 hours, with the visa delivered directly via email. This system accommodates air, land, and sea travelers not covered by the cruise-specific visa exemption.

By offering flexible entry options, Benin is clearly signaling its ambition to become a top-tier destination for both cruise passengers and independent travelers in West Africa.
